I’m pretty sure we’ve all heard something stupid from someone that’s supposedly into cars or an enthusiast but in reality they are just dumb and trying to fit in. My girls best friend, who’s not only a technician at a European luxury marque’s dealership. He once told me, around the time of the 2nd gen G35 going from 35 to 37, was the reason that the name was changing was because the car was bigger. I wanted to punch him in the face. What other stupid things have you guys heard?

We live in Indianapolis, a four hour drive from Detroit. I have no idea how he made it that far in life without being corrected or realizing his mistake.

Funnily enough we actually found out there is a Detroit in Texas, but it’s some po-dunk little 700-person town of hilljacks near the OK border.

He’s a good-looking dude with a great personality so the hiring manager figured he’d be a great people person to have around the dealership, I guess. Not like his job required a genius-level IQ anyways, he was basically a glorified paper-pusher who dealt with customer satisfaction reviews, like the customers would come in after a week or two and he’d bring them into his office and ask them questions about their ‘purchasing and initial ownership experience’. He really liked working there, but man some of the dumb shit he’s said about ‘Beamers’ makes you shake your head sometimes.

A few months ago I was at a used car lot helping my uncle buy a Honda Pilot. While he was doing paperwork I noticed a sexy grey car out of the corner of my eye tucked under the shade of the main building. It was an Audi R8 v8 WITH A gated MANUAL(!) and then a sales guy walks up and goes “Nice car right?” to which I reply with “yeah.”

Here’s the kicker. He then proceeds to tell me “The owner of the dealership owns this. The only one in the state. I can’t drive it because I can’t operate the paddles.” I simply nod and go back to admiring the car.

The car did not have tinted windows so you can clearly see the gated manual and it was the most common color found on the R8. In fact, I had seen a manual R8 the previous day at a local C&C event.

Even then, one is never in full control in an automated manual mode — you can’t bog down the engine by shifting too soon or bounce it off of the redline while in gear. The car will either downshift to avoid bogging or shift up when the redline has approached.

Well the focus SVT was the st170 in euroland where it debuted before the SVT...also on a road course the SVT focus is no slouch, mostly because of the stacked gears and the independent rear suspension. Also the car brakes as well as yours...Ha faster though it is not. I have my SVT still as well as a focus St and it is slow, but a great momentum car...

That being said, the fiesta st I feel like is the spiritual successor to the focus SVT...

Just because people feel strongly about something doesn’t mean they are correct. The argument between damper and dampener is similar to the argument between “different from”, “different than” and “different to” . Damper/dampener are just as interchangeable as different from/than/to, which you use is a matter of taste.

So I met a friend of a friend who’s a “huge car guy”, and I told him I was looking for a new DD. I’d driven the Taurus SHO, but it didn’t come in rwd which was kind of a deal breaker. All the German stuff was garbage. The 5-series was awful, and it was insane how such a bad car could have evolved from the e39. The Japanese stuff didn’t interest me. The Chryslers we just a bit too sloppy. So I was between the CTS V-Sport and the Chevy SS. And he told me:

I know a guy who’s building a Prelude track car. A 3rd gen, before they got any good VTEC-y engines. He was trying to tell me that FWD is as good as RWD, and he just likes FWD more.

I feel like this sort of thing transcends opinion. RWD is better . You’ve got separation of concerns between front and rear wheels. You can put more power down because you’ve got a set of wheels dedicated to it, rather than just trailing behind while the fronts do all the work. FWD may be better for space utilization, but not for a track car. He’s wrong.
